After restructuring — adding the missing semantic connections between terms like “Agile” and “Sprint Planning,” quantifying outcomes, fixing the parsing structure — he resubmitted with a match score of 89. Within two weeks he had six interviews. [1]
This case is now circulating in career-coaching circles for one reason: it is a clean demonstration of the gap between being qualified and being recognized as qualified by the algorithm doing the gating.
That gap is where most modern job-search anxiety lives. Here is what is actually happening, and what to do about it.
The math nobody applying for jobs in 2026 should ignore
Approximately 97.8% of Fortune 500 companies use Applicant Tracking Systems, and 83% now use AI-assisted screening as part of the pipeline. How an ATS actually decides

Five formatting errors that silently kill applications
These are flagged consistently across vendors.
- Contact information in the header or footer. Many parsers ignore header/footer regions entirely. Your name and email need to be in the document body.
- Skill bars or icon-based ratings. Visual skill indicators (“●●●○○ Python”) are invisible to ATS. Write the skill in plain text.
- Tables for layout. Tables work for actual tabular data; they fail when used as layout containers. Multi-column resumes built on hidden tables are the most common parsing-failure pattern.

If you are actively applying, the highest-leverage move is to take your strongest current resume and run it through a scanner against three real job descriptions you would actually apply to. The scores will tell you specifically what is missing — not by guess, but by diagnosis.
If your scores are below 75%, do not submit until you have restructured. The marginal application costs you nothing but reinforces a low-score pattern in your application history. Hold the line on quality.
The ATS is not the enemy. It is a filter operating with limited information about you. Your job is to ensure the limited information it does have is the most accurate possible representation of your qualifications.
